In Memoriam - Brian Mahon
It is with profound sadness that the International Federation of Denturists (IFD) announces the passing of our friend and colleague, Brian Mahon of Dublin, Ireland.
Brian passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary, their five daughters and many cherished grandchildren.
Brian’s journey in dentistry began at Trinity College Dublin, where he developed a strong foundation in dental technology. Although his early interest was in orthodontics, his years at the Trinity Dental Department introduced him to prosthetics and complete dentures—a field that quickly became his lifelong passion.
Together with Mary, Brian established a dental laboratory in Dublin, built on a commitment to exceptional craftsmanship, compassionate patient care and improving people’s quality of life. What began as a small family business evolved into Dentaltech, one of Ireland’s leading denture care providers, employing more than 50 professionals across five locations. Brian was also instrumental in expanding care beyond the clinic through dedicated mobile units serving nursing homes, hospitals and private residences.
Brian was much more than a successful clinician and entrepreneur. He was one of the true pioneers of Denturism in Ireland and the United Kingdom. He worked tirelessly to advance professional recognition, supported legislative progress, and firmly believed that education was the key to the future of the profession. Throughout his career, he educated and mentored hundreds of students, dental technicians, dentists, Clinical Dental Technicians and Denturists in Ireland, Poland and many other countries.
His daughter, Bevin Mahon, together with Brian, transformed Dentaltech into a multi-award-winning Denturist clinic recognised for excellence in patient care and innovation. Under their leadership, Dentaltech became Ireland’s first fully integrated digital denture clinic, equipped with intraoral and extraoral scanners, an advanced in-house laboratory, multiple 3D printers and a highly skilled clinical team.
Brian’s influence extended far beyond Ireland.
Mario Viveros, a close friend and colleague, shared these heartfelt words:
“I had the pleasure of meeting Brian in January 2006 at George Brown College in Toronto, Canada, where we became good friends. Brian generously shared his knowledge with me and welcomed me to Dublin, allowing me to gain invaluable clinical experience under his mentorship. Together we completed postgraduate training through the Royal College of Surgeons of England, enabling us to register with both the English and Irish General Dental Councils.
Brian was a pioneer in Denturism who helped pave the way for future generations through education, commitment and dedication. He travelled the world teaching and lecturing, always inspiring others with his enthusiasm.
Beyond his professional achievements, Brian was a devoted family man and a true gentleman. He loved spending time with Mary and his family, enjoyed golf, walking his dog along the beach and birdwatching.
His legacy will live on through the generations of professionals he inspired and the thousands of patients whose lives he improved.
Thank you, Brian, for your kindness, dedication, friendship, and contagious enthusiasm.
Bye for now, my dear friend. The next few Guinness are for you.”
Brian’s contributions to Denturism have left an enduring mark on our profession. His dedication to education, patient care, innovation and professional advancement will continue to inspire future generations.
On behalf of the International Federation of Denturists, we extend our deepest condolences to Mary, Bevin, the entire Mahon family, their colleagues at Dentaltech and Brian’s many friends around the world.
Rest in peace, Brian. Your legacy will never be forgotten
